Glow in the Dark: A Great Pumpkin Night of Faith, Family & Fall Fun
There is something special about a fall evening.
The air feels a little cooler. Pumpkins begin appearing on porches. Families gather for festivals, neighborhood walks, church celebrations and community events. Children anticipate costumes, treats and the excitement of traveling from one glowing porch to another.
Yet some of the most memorable parts of the season aren't found inside the candy bucket.
They're found in the walk together, the conversations between houses, the traditions families repeat every year and the little moments children remember long after the treats are gone.
This fall, make room for a Great Pumpkin-inspired family night filled with faith, fun, treats, togetherness and plenty of glow.
“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” — Michael J. Fox
🍂 The Great Pumpkin Tradition
Pumpkins have become one of fall's most recognizable symbols. From pumpkin patches and jack-o'-lanterns to pumpkin bread and front-porch decorations, they're practically inseparable from autumn.
Here are a few fun pumpkin facts to share with children during your fall adventures:
Pumpkins are fruits—not vegetables.
Pumpkins belong to the same plant family as cucumbers, squash and melons.
Pumpkins can be orange, white, yellow, green and even blue-gray.
Almost every part of a pumpkin can be used, including its flesh, seeds and flowers.
Jack-o'-lantern traditions have roots in Ireland and Britain, where people once carved vegetables such as turnips before pumpkins became the popular American choice.
Turn those facts into a family challenge. Ask everyone to guess how many seeds are inside your pumpkin before opening it, sort the seeds into groups, measure the pumpkin's circumference, roast the seeds afterward, or let children sketch the pumpkin before transforming it into a jack-o'-lantern.
Suddenly, one pumpkin becomes an evening of conversation, math, science, creativity and family connection.
Let Your Light Shine
Fall also gives families an opportunity to connect ordinary seasonal traditions with meaningful conversations about faith.
A glowing jack-o'-lantern can prompt a simple discussion about what it means to be a light to other people.
Jesus tells His followers:
“You are the light of the world.” — Matthew 5:14
Ask children: What does it look like to be a light?
Maybe it's inviting another child to walk with the group.
Maybe it's saying thank you at every door.
Maybe it's sharing a treat.
Maybe it's helping a younger sibling.
Maybe it's showing kindness when someone else isn't.
Children don't have to wait until adulthood to bring light into their communities. A family walking through its own neighborhood has dozens of tiny opportunities to practice kindness.
That's what can make a faith-filled fall night particularly meaningful.
From Neighborhood to Neighborhood: Make the Journey Part of the Fun
Trick-or-treating doesn't have to be a race to collect the most candy.
Make the journey part of your family's tradition.
Before leaving home, choose your route together. Decide which neighborhoods, homes, community celebrations or Trunk-or-Treat events you'll visit. Establish a meeting point and make sure children understand the family's rules before the excitement begins.
For a more comfortable nighttime outing, families can consider carrying flashlights or other visibility items, using sidewalks and designated crossings where available, keeping younger children with supervising adults, checking treats before eating them, and making sure costumes and footwear allow children to move and see comfortably.
The goal isn't to take the adventure out of the evening.
It's to create an environment where everyone can concentrate on making memories together.
A Great Companion for the Night: Glow in the Dark Trick-or-Treat Kit + Tote
For this year's fall season, our temporary Seasonal Pop-Up Store is featuring a limited companion for those nighttime adventures:
GLOW IN THE DARK: TRICK-OR-TREAT KIT + TOTE
The kit brings together several useful and faith-filled Fall-night extras in one ready-to-go collection:
🎃 Large Jack-O'-Lantern Tote — 15" × 16½"
Plenty of room for collecting treats and carrying the night's little treasures.
🎃 Glow With God Sticker
A fun faith-centered addition children can enjoy during the season.
🎃Christian Pumpkin Glow Bracelet
An easy-to-wear glow accessory for the evening.
🎃Assorted Religious Light-Up/Glow Handout
Each kit includes one assorted light-up/glow piece featuring a faith-centered message.
The idea is simple:
Grab. Glow. Go.
Take it from the neighborhood to the community festival, from one house to another, or along to your family's fall gathering.
The glow accessories can complement—not replace—adult supervision, flashlights/lighting, pedestrian awareness and other appropriate nighttime precautions.
And because this is a seasonal pop-up item, the collection is available for a limited period rather than as a permanent store offering.
Don't Forget the Fall Treats
Before or after your nighttime adventure, create a small fall-treat table at home.
It doesn't have to be elaborate.
Try warm apple cider, caramel apple slices, cinnamon popcorn, pumpkin muffins, roasted pumpkin seeds, apple nachos, hot chocolate, pumpkin-shaped sandwiches or a simple family snack board with pretzels, fruit, cheese and seasonal treats.
Then create a Great Pumpkin Family Taste Test.
Everyone chooses:
Best Fall Drink
Best Pumpkin Treat
Best Apple Treat
Most Unexpected Favorite
The winning treat gets added to next year's family fall tradition.
🎃 Try a “Great Pumpkin Family Night”
You can turn the entire evening into a tradition your family repeats every fall.
Start with pumpkin carving or decorating in the afternoon. Prepare a fall treat together. Take a family photo with the finished pumpkins. Read Matthew 5:14–16 and talk about ways your family can “shine” through kindness. Pack the Glow in the Dark Trick-or-Treat Kit + Tote. Walk your planned route together. Come home, inspect and sort the treats, make something warm to drink, and end the evening by letting everyone share their favorite moment.
One simple question can become particularly meaningful:
“How did you see someone shine tonight?”
Maybe it was a neighbor who decorated the entire yard for children.
Maybe someone complimented a costume.
Maybe an older sibling held a younger child's hand.
Maybe a child remembered to say thank you without being reminded.
Those are the memories worth keeping.
🍁 Faith-Filled Fall Fun Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
Children may remember the giant inflatable pumpkin.
They may remember their costume.
They'll probably remember their favorite candy.
But family traditions can give them something much bigger to remember:
We did this together.
That's what makes fall such a wonderful opportunity to slow down and intentionally create moments of connection.
Decorate the pumpkin.
Bake the treat.
Take the walk.
Tell the stories.
Laugh at the costumes.
Share your faith.
Look after one another.
And when the sun goes down...
Grab. Glow. Go.
